HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) is a military off-road vehicle used primarily by United States Armed Forces and it is also used by numerous other countries and organizations in the world. Vehicle is often called Humvee. In the 1970s, the United States Army concluded that the militarized civilian trucks and some other vehicles, mainly Willys Jeeps, in use no longer satisfied their requirements. In 1979, the Army drafted final specifications for a HMMWV. AM General finished the first prototype in 1981 and regular production was started in 1984.
Humvee became better known amongst civilian people during operation Desert Strom in the Gulf War in years 1990 and 1991. American people created a demand for the vehicle and Am General soon started production of civilian version of Humvee, called Hummer H1. American actor (and later, governor of California) Arnold Schwarzenegger has become a huge fan of Hummers.
Diorama is set in mountain pass in Afghanistan, during American operations. A patrol of four U.S. soldiers is returning back to base with their military vehicle (Humvee version M998). After heavy raining, there is a landslide and road is damaged. Patrol has stopped and soldiers got out from vehicle for the terrain survey. Road seems to be impassable, so they are trying to find the other way in a map. One of the soldiers is digging out an old land mine with his combat knife. It can be just a coincidence, but soldiers are cautious and they are checking if there is no possibility of rebel ambush.
