How to create green transparent glass

Difficulty:

During World War II long-range bombers started using tinted green glass in cockpits as protection against bright sunlight. Transparent parts of plastic model kits are usually made from colorless plastic. If you follow my instructions then you can create tinted, but still transparent glass. We can't paint transparent parts with acrylic paint because then you would make glass opaque.

After a long search I found a solution to my problem. I simply used fill from ballpoint pen that you can buy in every stationery shop.

We will need:

  • dish cleaner
  • toothpick or thin wire
  • fill from ballpoint pen (usually green)
  • soft brush

Procedure:

  1. First of all, we need to carefully clean surface of our plastic glass parts. We can use common dish cleaner.
  2. Then we push paint out of pen fill with very thin object (e.g. thin wire or toothpick).
  3. We spread paint on surface with soft brush. Criss-cross painting technique has proven useful. We cover the surface with paint uniformly. Do not push too hard.
  4. Then we let the paint dry. It is important to cover painted parts with something. It is protection against dust that could stick to the surface.

Other possible alternative is using glass paint. It is much easier, but from my point of view, it doesn't look so good.

You should not try it with parts from your plastic model kit right away. It is essential to learn it by practice with something different so you can't ruin anything. Have fun!

Chápu, že náplň do propisky či barva na sklo je snadno dostupná. Transparentní odstíny však dělají i renomovaní výrobci barev (Tamyia, GSI Gunze, lihová Agama) a práce je s nimi určitě pohodovější.
